Money matters

Australia’s currency is Australian Dollars (AUD). Bureau du Change outlets are plentiful, including a number of Travelex branches which can be found across Sydney.

Current exchange rate information can be found at www.xe.com.

Payment

The most commonly accepted credit cards are MasterCard, Visa, American Express, JCB, Diners Club and their affiliates. Most retailers and restaurants use an electronic payment system (EFTPOS).

Banks

Banks are open Monday to Friday, 9.30am to 4.00pm or 5.00pm, depending upon the branch. Automated Teller Machines (ATMs) are widely available.

Shopping hours

Popular shopping precincts in Sydney are open seven days a week, from 9am to 5.30pm except on Thursdays when many shops are open until about 9pm. Some specialty shops in major shopping centres open later in the morning but will stay open until 6pm or 7pm Monday to Friday, with 9am-5pm trading on weekends.

Tipping and Bargaining
Service charges are generally not added to the bill in hotels or restaurants. At any time, tipping is your choice and in most places is not expected. Bargaining is not the general custom in Australia.

Goods and Services Tax

Australia has a Goods and Services Tax (GST) of 10 per cent. You may be able to claim a refund of the GST paid on goods bought here if you have spent AUD$300 or more in one store, no more than 30 days before departing Australia. Tourist Refund Scheme facilities are located in the departure area of international terminals. Find out more.
